Going Green

With energy prices continuing to rise, it is imperative that we make all our buildings more energy efficient.

The eco-build movement, whilst not a particularly new concept, has experienced a relatively slow uptake within the British construction industry.

It is not all about building with straw bales or mud (although these are some methods being adopted), it is about reducing the impact of a building through virtually every aspect of a buildings design, use of materials, orientation and location to suit a particular climate.

It is about understanding how each of these building aspects affect energy performance and in turn provide us with a greater understanding of which methods to use in order to restrict energy consumption.

Many of the most successful eco-builds to date are very conventional in appearance and this is driven by demand.

Murray & Burrell believe in planning for the future and providing our clients with a building not only fit for purpose but which will provide savings for both the environment and the individual in the long run.

A current project is the design and construction of an eco-friendly new home overlooking the River Caddon at Clovenfords.

The house will maximise the location through the use of glass and local reclaimed stone and reduce the environmental impact through utilising under floor heating, rain water harvesting, solar panels and high insulation.
