Galashiels lies at the heart of the Borders region in the narrow valley of the Gala Water close to its meeting with the River Tweed.
Sitting on the A7, one of the main routes through the Borders, linking Edinburgh with Carlisle, Galashiels has direct routes to the other major towns in the area, such as Melrose, Selkirk, St Boswells, Hawick, Peebles and Jedburgh.
Work has already begun on the Waverley Railway Project, which will reintroduce the rail link between Edinburgh and Galashiels (due to be completed by 2013).
What makes Galashiels a great location is the perfect mix of services and amenities - schools, sports and leisure facilities, shops, restaurants, medical services etc., all in picturesque natural surroundings.
Galashiels is served by some very good schools, including the Galashiels Academy and is home to Borders College and Heriot-Watt University.
The once famous textile town is now emerging as the shopping Mecca for the Borders, with the former mill sites now home to well known high street names such as Marks & Spencer, Next and New Look.
Open 24 hours, the new Adsa and Tesco Extra are attracting shoppers from the whole region.
The town boasts a four-screen multiplex cinema, sports centres, and a children’s indoor adventure playground.
For those who enjoy the great outdoors the surrounding area offers spectacular walks and hill treks, cycle routes, horse riding, forest picnic sites and, of course, some of the finest fishing in the world on the River Tweed.
This is rugby country and Galashiels is home to the Gala RFC at Netherdale
Stadium.
The 18-hole course in Galashiels is just one of many excellent courses in the Borders.
The Borders General Hospital is situated in nearby Melrose.
